Lost And Confused In Planetside 2
Yesterday, I got an e-mail from Sony Online Entertainment. It was an invite to play in the Close Beta Test of Planetside 2. I was surprised when I read the e-mail because I wasn't expecting it. Excited, I immediately clicked on the link in the e-mail which took me to Planetside 2's website. Logged-in to my SOE account and downloaded the game's launcher program.
After I installed Planetside 2's launcher, I logged-in and it started to download the rest of the game. According to the launcher, the size of the entire download was less than 6GB and it took me, more or less, 4 to 5 hours to download all of it.
When it finished downloading, the launcher installed it and, in just a few minutes after that, I was already in the game creating a new character. Unfortunately, the game won't let me create a new character because it won't let me choose a server but, after carefully analyzing the server selection screen, I realized that all the servers were down.
I exited the game and went to check the Planetside 2's forum for information about the server's availability. I found out that the servers were only online from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Pacific). I had my computer clock set on 3 different timezones and Pacific Time was one of them. When I checked it, I learned that it was almost time for the servers to open. I waited until it was 6:00 AM Pacific and tried again but this time I was able to finish creating my character and enter the game because the servers were already up and running.
It was my first time playing Planetside 2 and I don't have the slightest of what to do next. I was also immediately invited to join a squad which I accepted but I kinda lost track of the person who invited me. I spent a lot of minutes just running around outside the base looking for some action and while I was doing that I was also trying to learn the controls by viewing the default Keybinding.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I was also lagging badly in the game. My graphics setting was set to medium but setting it to low kinda helped a little but only by a little bit. I was still lagging specially in populated areas like the base. The funny thing about it was, it happens only when there were other players around.
When I finally got into combat, the experience was very intense because I couldn't see where the enemies were and the lag wasn't helping either. I just followed the other players in my faction and shot at what they were shooting. Eventually, I got used to the lag and the game but that didn't mean success for me though because I never got to kill anyone except for one which didn't count because I killed an ally by accidentally throwing a grenade at him.
Besides all my problem while playing the game, I can definitely see that Planetside 2 has tons of potential. The open world map was very different for me specially in a first-person-shooter and the combat was very exciting and intense. If the developers can do something about the lag then Planetside 2 will be a very awesome MMO.
