Star Citizen » Raised Over 550 Million USD with 4 4 Million Users

Star Citizen, the ambitious Space Sci-Fi MMO, has been in development for over a decade and has raised over $550 million through crowdfunding. Despite its extremely slow turtle paced progress and the fact that the 1.0 version has yet to be released, the single player module Squadron 42 is a notable exception.

With over 4.4 million registered users, Star Citizen has become the most successful crowdfunding project to date, having raised over $551 million at the time of writing this news. Last month alone, it raised over $500 million, with $113 million donated by users in 2022, representing a 33% increase from the previous year.

The Kickstarter campaign for Star Citizen was launched in 2012, with the original release date set for 2014. However, the game has experienced numerous delays and is currently in the state of eternal alpha.

In comparison, other notable crowdfunding projects include the failed MMORPG Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues by Richard Garriott, which raised $11.8 million, followed by Shenmue III, which raised $6.6 million, and Observation of the Earth & the Sun, which raised $5.5 million.

Despite its long development time, Star Citizen's community remains dedicated to the project and continues to blindly fund its development. The game's developer, Cloud Imperium Games, has promised to continue updating and improving the game until it reaches its full potential.

The success of Star Citizen has not gone unnoticed in the gaming industry, with many speculating on the reasons behind its unprecedented crowdfunding success. Some argue that the game's ambitious scope and the involvement of industry veteran Chris Roberts have contributed to its appeal, while others attribute its success to the passionate community of wealthy players who have supported the project from the beginning.

Regardless of the reasons, Star Citizen's crowdfunding success has broken records and demonstrated the power of community-driven development. While the game may still be in its alpha stage, its dedicated community and massive funding make it a project worth watching in the decades to come.
